WHAT’S HAPPENING ON ONE HAPPY ISLAND

National Anthem and Flag Day
March 18 marked the island’s celebration of National Anthem and Flag Day. Everyone flies their Aruban flags with pride and wear all manner of t-shirts, bandanas, caps and other items adorned with the theme of the flag. The day includes all kinds of fun games and sporting events played all over the island as well as lots of traditional folk music and dance, including the Baile Cinta or ribbon dance – which is very similar to Maypole dances in other cultures where long ribbons are attached to the top of the tall wooden pole and each dancer holds the end of a ribbon, weaving complex patterns as they dance in a circle around the pole. In honor of that holiday, we present here the lyrics of Aruba’s national anthem, Aruba Dushi Tera (Aruba Sweet Land). It’s a waltz composed by Juan Chabaya “Padu” Lampe (music) and Rufo Wever (lyrics). The last stanza was composed by Hubert Booi:

Aruba beloved home
our venerated cradle
though small and simple you may be
you are indeed esteemed.

Chorus:
Oh Aruba dear country
our rock so beloved
our love for you is so strong
that nothing can destroy it. (repeat)

Your beaches so much admired
with palm trees all adorned
your coat of arms and flag
the symbols of our pride!

Chorus

The greatness of our people
is their great cordiality
that God may guide and preserve
their love for liberty!

Chorus

Aruba International Half Marathon
This road race has kept growing into a major sporting event on One Happy Island. Once again this year the race sold out. Participants ran nearly the length of the island along the western coast, beginning in the south at Joe Laveist Sport Park in San Nicolas and ending in front of Alhambra Casino Aruba in Oranjestad. This year’s event marked the 33rd edition, and we congratulate everyone who participated!

Semana Santa: Happy Easter!
Because Good Friday, Easter Sunday and Easter Monday are all recognized holidays on One Happy Island, we end up with a nice long holiday weekend full of family gatherings and attending church services, but the biggest Easter tradition that has evolved in Aruba is beach camping! Please note that camping on the beaches in front of the Palm Beach resorts is prohibited, but lots of families will be pitching tents in places such as Eagle Beach, Hadicurari Beach and Baby Beach. Happy Easter from all of us at Re/Max Advantage Realty!
